Follow the Great Silk Road and discover the two Pamir countries through towns, villages, valleys, gorges and mountains. Share nomadic life on the highlands and steppes of Central Asia.
Day 1: Departure from Zürich with TK Transit to Istanbul and Arrival to Dushanbe the next morning.
Day 2: Dushanbe Meet at the airport by your guide, and the driver. Hotel and rest. Lunch. Afternoon: visits around Dushanbe: Archaeological Museum. Museum of Traditional Musical Instruments. Meal in town. Night at the hotel
Day 3: Dushanbe - Kulob - Kalaikum - 360 km - 11 hrs / 4x4 vehicle (like Mitsubishi, Toyota) The road passes through green hills and valleys, along the Nurek Lake and the adventure begins as soon as you pass from the Shurabad Pass (3252m). From there, you will have the first views of the Afghan mountains. Visit the impressive Hulbuk Fortress. Meal and night homestay in Kalaikum. Altitude: 1100 m.
Day 4: Kalaikum - Khorog: 260 km - 7 hrs It is one of the most spectacular routes with big turns on the road going up and down, along the Piandj River that borders Afghanistan. The view is breathtaking at every turn. On request, you can stop to take pictures or just admire. Picnic on the way. In late afternoon we arrive at Khorog, the capital town of the Pamir. We will stay there 2 days. Meals and night at the hotel.
Day 5: Khorog: Visit the Bazaar and the Botanical Garden (... one of the tallest in the world.) Picnic in this place from which one enjoys a splendid sight on the city and the valley. Meal and overnight at the hotel.
Day 6: Khorog-Ishkashim-Yamg - 200 km - 6 hrs Going south, we continue to drive along the Piandj River. Possibility of taking a thermal bath in Garm-eChesmeh. Arriving in the village of Iskashim, we enter the famous Wakhan corridor. Due to its strategic situation, it is the region of important historical sites: the fortress of Khakha close to the thermal baths of Bibi-Fatmah (thermal bath according to request) and the fort of Yamchun. From these places we enjoy a fantastic views of all the Afghan peaks that soar between 5000 and 7000m. Visit the Sufi Museum: Muborak-Kadam. We stop for the night at the village of Yamg (2700 m.), Meet very nice family and stay there overnight
Day 7: Yamg - Langar - 55 km - 2 hrs A day with short road drive, which gives the opportunity to explore several historical sites and stop in the villages, to meet the population of Pamiri and Ismaili confession, a very open population and legendary hospitality. Stop in the last village of Wakhan region Langar (2800 m.). Night and meal at the inhabitant.
Day 8: Langar-Bulunkul-Kara Kum - 175 km / 7 hrs Today, early in the morning we leave the Wakhan, its wooded villages and greenery. We are continue climbing by a dirt road, to reach the highlands populated by semi-nomadic Kyrgyz. The landscape changes dramatically, the cultivated fields give way to the steppes where grazing herds of sheep, yaks, cattle and horses cover the horizon. Kyrgyz yurts are appearing. We reach the famous M41 road, appreciated by the "bikers" of the whole world and reach the village of Kara Kum, neighbor of Alichur (3800m). Night in the homestay or the yurt.
Day 9: Kara Kum -Kengshiber-Murghab - 180 km 7-8 hrs In the morning you can take a thermal bath in Jarti Gumbez. Visit the petroglyphs of Shakty. We drive in the center of gigantic steppes, surrounded by mountains, sometimes with remains of snow. In the afternoon we reach the capital of this high-elevation district, Murghab (3650 m.) The Afgan border as moved away and China is coming closer. We are close to the Chinese border. Night at the inhabitant.
Day 10: Murghab-Kara Kul - 135 km - 3-4 hrs Before leaving Murghab, we stop at the Yak House Store. We take the road and reach the Akbaital Pass (4655 m.), the highest point of the trip. On the way we will stop near remains of an old Russian fort from the 19th and a after a long descent we arrive at the village of Karakul, located on the south shore of the lake of the same name (3900m). Meals and night homestay.
Day 11: Kara Kul-Sary Mogol-Lenin Peak Camp Base-Tulpar Kul -165 km - 6 hrs Early in the morning we take the road towards the Tajik-Kyrgyz border post, road lined by metal barrier delimiting the Chinese border, relic of the Soviet era. After customs formalities, we cross the pass of Kyzyl Art (4220m) and cross a long noman'sland to reach the Kyrgyz border post. The green pastures appear and the immense plateau of the Pamir Alai opens before us. We quickly reach the village of Saray Mogol (3000m.) and take the road of "jailoos" (pastures) to stop at the camp of Tulpar-Kul lake (3500m.) where the yurt awaits us to spend the night. Day 12: Tulpar Kul - Sary Mogul - Osh - 240 km - 4 hrs / jeep Today the driver of "Pamir Guides" leaves us and Talant continues the journey with his own vehicle. Before leaving the camp, we go to the banks of the river to admire the Lenin Peak (7134m) and see the bridge built by the NGO Pamir's Bridges, at the highest altitude of all projects. By a beautiful road, we go down the valley of Gulcho and arrive in Osh (1000m.), The country's second capital. Visit the city and Sulaiman-Too (the throne of Solomon), the Sacred Mountains where people come to make a pilgrimage. Meal in town and overnight at the hotel.
Day 13: Osh - Toktogul - 6 hrs We will take the road to Toktogul, visit the city of Uzgen (mausoleum of the Karakhanid era) Drving along the Lake Toktogul (water reservoir), we arrive in the city of the same name. Meal and night in homestay
Day 14: Toktogul - Suusamyr - Song-Kul - 7 hrs Transfer to Song-Kul (3000m.) Through the huge Suusamyr mountain plateau and along the magnificent wild Kokomeren river. Lakefront accommodation under the yurt
Day 15: Song-Kul - Barskoon - 6 hrs We leave the Naryn area, and discover the Issyk-Kul Lake area, the second largest salt lake in the world after the lake Titicaca. Accommodation and meals: guest house with banya (sauna), showers.
Day 16: Barskoon - Karakol - 3hrs We move away from the edge of the lake and we enter the Jeti-Oguz gorge and the Kok-Jayik valley. After we will come to Karakol. Accommodation: guest house
Day 17: Karakol City Tour: Bazaar, Dungan Mosque, Wooden Orthodox Church, Karakol Museum (photos by Ella Maillart taken during his 1932 expedition). Accommodation: guest house
Day 18: Karakol - Cholpon Ata - 2-3 hrs At the exit of Karakol, we will visit the museum of Prejvalski, the great Russian explorer of the 19th century. Along the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, we will arrive at Cholpon Ata and descend to a lakeside hotel. Rest and walk. Visit the local museum of the city. Accommodation at the hotel.
Day 19: Cholpon Ata - Bishkek: 5 hrs In the morning we will visit the petroglyphs of the Scythian period XII-VIII century BC. Departure for Bishkek by the "Boom canyon". We will visit the site of Burana, an ancient city of the time of the Karakhanid of X-XI century and arrive in the Kyrgyz capital in the afternoon. Accommodation: hotel
Day 20: Bishkek Tour Contrasting city, with Soviet architecture but with gardens and superb walks. You will visit the Osh Grand Bazaar, its animated aisles, its handicrafts, its cultural contrasts, between specialties dried fruits from the Middle East.
Day 21: In the night, transfer to the airport: 45 min.
A Francophone Kyrgyz guide (one or two assistants depending on the number of participants in a group), a driver. Meeting at the airport upon arrival and the accompaniment during the whole stay proposed on the program. A horseman with his packhorses for the treks.
